My views about these phones

Build and Design - Sony has gone for completely curved design and it feels great in hand. Both phones exude elegance apart from being dust proof & water-proof.

Hardware and Software - Both phones come with Kitkat 4.4.4 out of the box along with 3GB RAM, Snapdragon 801 SoC, full HD display etc

According to me, these are flagship devices and hence both are simply brilliant. There is no compromise anywhere and that's how things should be. Generally compact versions of flagships are under-powered but Sony has proved all critics wrong by giving same powerful hardware & software package to Z3 compact.

So, I will conclude my post now. I think the launch of second flagship in same year by Sony reinforces the fact that Sony is keen to deliver latest technology to its fans and followers. Also, Z2 owners will not feel left out because the Z3 is not a major shift from its predecessor but the improvements are noteworthy.

GeForce GTX 980, 970 Set New Standards as World’s Most Advanced GPUs

India, September 19, 2014—In a major leap forward for gaming, NVIDIA today introduced the first high-end products based on its Maxwell™ chip architecture—the new GeForce® GTX™ 980 and 970 GPUs—delivering unmatched performance, major new graphics capabilities and twice the energy efficiency of the previous generation.

Maxwell is the company’s 10^th-generation GPU architecture, following Kepler™. The engine of next-generation gaming, it solves some of the most complex lighting and graphics challenges in visual computing.

Its new Voxel Global Illumination (VXGI) technology enables gaming GPUs for the first time to deliver real-time dynamic global illumination. Scenes are significantly more lifelike as light interacts realistically in the game environment—resulting in deeper levels of immersion for gamers.

And a range of new technologies—including multi-frame sampled anti-aliasing (MFAA), dynamic super resolution (DSR), VR Direct and extremely energy-efficient design—enable Maxwell-based GTX 980 and 970 GPUs to render frames with the highest fidelity at higher clock speeds and lower power consumption than any other GPU in their class.

“Maxwell has been years in the making, inspired by our gamers, and created by the best minds in 3D graphics,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, NVIDIA’s co-founder and chief executive officer. “Its extraordinary performance, efficiency and technologies will empower developers to do their finest work and delight gamers worldwide.”

VXGI – Voxel Global Illumination

Realistic lighting is among the most challenging problems faced in real-time graphics. Simulating both direct and indirect lighting, such as reflections for dynamic scenes, has to date been too computationally demanding for GPUs beyond those available to professionals. Game developers have been forced to use lighting tricks that compromise scene realism.

Maxwell overcomes these limitations, combining the performance and programmability required to model both direct and indirect light sources. It does so by deploying VXGI, a new NVIDIA technique to accurately depict indirect lighting, including diffuse lighting, specular lighting and reflections.

VXGI is being added to NVIDIA GameWorks™, the world’s most advanced game graphics library, so developers can build future games with dynamic environments filled with rich, natural lighting and breathtaking realism. It is being integrated into popular games engines like Unreal Engine 4, and will be available to developers later this year.

“We’ve been on a journey for more dynamic and realistic lighting in the game industry, and VXGI is the next big step in that journey,” said Halldor Fannar, chief technology officer of CCP Games. “By offering real-time, dynamic indirect lighting, VXGI is a generational leap forward.”

MFAA – Multi-Frame Sampled Anti-Aliasing

NVIDIA engineers have given the GTX 980 and 970 a further performance boost with a new technique called multi-frame sampled anti-aliasing, which leverages new capabilities in Maxwell GPUs.

MFAA varies the anti-aliasing sample patterns across pixels both within an individual frame and between multiple frames. It then uses a newly developed synthesis filter to produce the best image quality and does so faster than conventional anti-aliasing. For gamers, MFAA yields image quality approaching that of 4xMSAA at the cost of 2xMSAA—enabling titles to run faster while maintaining high levels of image quality.

DSR – Dynamic Super Resolution

The GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 GPUs can deliver a higher fidelity gaming experience even for those playing on standard 1080p displays. With Maxwell’s Dynamic Super Resolution technology, games can be rendered at 4K or other high-end resolutions and then scaled down to the native resolution on the user’s display using a 13-tap Gaussian filter. The resulting image is much higher quality than simply rendering directly to 1080p.

DSR is automatically enabled through GeForce Experience™, an NVIDIA application that automatically optimizes game settings for peak performance, downloads the latest drivers, and enables game streaming and in-game action capture. Gamers can turn on DSR and enjoy high-fidelity gaming with a single click of a button—without having to upgrade their monitor.

VR Direct            

To deliver on the immersive potential of virtual reality, games require high frame rates and low latency. VR Direct technology incorporates a number of new features to increase performance, lower latency and increase compatibility for VR headsets. These features include:

·        VR SLI—provides heightened performance on virtual reality devices where multiple GPUs can be assigned a specific eye to render the stereo images faster.

·        Asynchronous Warp—cuts latency in half and quickly adjusts images as gamers move their heads, without the need to re-render new frames.

·        Auto Stereo—improves game compatibility for VR devices, such as Oculus Rift, and allows users to play games on select headsets that weren’t originally designed for VR.

“We built Unreal Engine 4 using NVIDIA’s Kepler architecture but the GTX 980 and 970 GPUs, based on the new Maxwell architecture, are the most powerful, efficient GPUs for creating scenes of unprecedented detail across PC and VR experiences right now,” said Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO at Epic Games. “Our developers are pushing the graphical high end with Maxwell GPUs.”

Moto G - My experience

So today, I will be talking about Moto G, the most popular budget smartphone nowadays.

I spent over a month with this smartphone and I must say that I AM IMPRESSED.
No phone is perfect, so I will cover few flaws here too.

This phone is retailing for approx 10,500 INR for 8GB model (Prices updated as on 4 Aug 2014)
I am listing down few notable specs of this device below. Detailed specs can be found on manufacturer's website.

To keep this post an easy read, I will put out my views in bullet points.

THE GOODIES ABOUT THIS PHONE

• 720p HD display with great viewing angles, Text and Images are very clear 
• Quad Core Snapdragon processor at this price point is a steal
• Butter Smooth UI, smooth animations with zero lags
• The graphic chip and processor are very capable and perform well
• The performance of the 5MP snapper is great during the day and decent in low-lighting too
• Dual SIM capabilities
• Gorilla Glass makes the screen scratch-resistant. No need of a screen guard
• The screen also has water-resistant coating so it can survive few splashes of water
• No manufacturer bloat-ware. Pure Android experience at its best.

THE NOT SO GOOD ASPECTS OF THIS PHONE

• The battery performance is not up to the mark
• Charging this phone with bundled moto charger is irritating as it takes lot of time to charge.
• The screen seems small because the software buttons take up some space so for people who are not used to smaller size screens will feel disappointed
• Slightly heavy at 143 g.
• Slippery back, so must get a grip cover.
• No SD card slot so maximum storage is 16 GB. There is no 32GB version in India
• No USB OTG support

Overall, at 10499 INR, I think Moto G is a nice smartphone for the budget conscious. There are alternatives from Lava, Karbonn, Micromax, LG, Samsung, HTC but they are not able to match the price-point when it comes to the hardware package. However, if you are alright with a Mediatek chipset instead of Qualcomm Snapdragon, then there are plenty of VFM options available.

Xolo Q800 - Unrooting and going back to stock rom to claim warranty

I have a Xolo Q800 - Old Chipset, which is rooted and has a custom ROM. Now as you would be aware, at service centre, rooted phones are not accepted so I decided to unroot to claim my warranty.

Step 0 - Replace custom boot animation with stock animation.
Step 1 - Flashing Stock ROM
Step 2 - Flashing Stock Recovery
Step 3 - Unrooting
Step 4 - Format and Reset to factory settings

The Xolo Q800 comes with 4GB internal storage. Out of which 1GB is phone storage and 2GB is mounted sdcard. This sdcard is internal storage. Pls remove any external SD card from your phone. Also remove sim card from your device.

Step 0 :
- Download Root explorer from xda developers
- Download stock boot animation zip from xda developers or Facebook group of Xolo Q800 Core.
- Rename stock boot animation zip to bootanimation.zip and put it in sd card of your phone
- Open root explorer, in top left corner, it i written Mount as R/O, click Mount as R/W to its right.
- Earlier it was R/O read-only, now R/W read-write option is enabled in Root Explorer. This is very important.
- While in root explorer, Copy bootanimation.zip from sd card, now keep scrolling up to reach main folder of device where several files and folders exist.
- now click System> Media and paste it here, replace all.
- Step Zero is complete, check stock boot animation by rebooting your phone.

Step 1 :
- Download the stock ROM from this link - https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BxBsbgtpWSyWaVpWdUhVRWZLc2s/edit
- Copy this file directly to your SD card (2GB one) and do not put it in any folder.
- Now boot into recovery mode. (Hoping that you have TWRP or CWM installed)
- Wipe cache, dalvik and data. Do not wipe anything else.
- Click Install and select the zip file download above (stock rom)
- Now finish the operation and it will show that root priveleges are not fixed, so fix them
- It will reboot into stock rom, that will take some time. Setup everything and check Step 2.

Step 2 :
- Your phone is still rooted and it needs to be kept that way till we install stock recovery.
- To check if your phone is still rooted, check for Superuser or Super SU app in menu.
- Download stock recovery img from this link - https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B5gmcIMdtI8cdjZ0bFhQS1dGMDQ/edit?usp=drive_web
- Put it in your SD card and do not put it in any folder.
- Download Mobile Uncle Tools from Play store, open it and grant permissions
- Click recover mode and it will show you recovery.img as present, click on it
- This will replace TWRP/CWM with stock recovery, click ok and restart your device. Time for Step 3.

Now your phone is like factory device, just two things left, unroot and cleanup.

Step 3
- Download Framaroot from xda developers v 1.5.3
- Open it, select unroot option and click on boromir
- It will show as Unroot Done. Click ok and restart your device.
- Now check if the Super User or Super SU app is still there in menu or not.
- If it is not there, then your job is done. If not then, open the app, under settings look for Full Unroot option, click that and reboot your phone.

Step 4
- Go to Settings > Storage > Restore factory settings. Click on format
- Check the phone storage too, click on erase everything.
- It will reboot and everything will be wiped out. You can set up your mobile once again. No need to enter google account and others, just start your phone and now your phone is ready for warranty service.

Chennai, January 23, 2014: In a step to revolutionize the international calling market in India, Aircel today launched first of its kind international calling plan – Aircel ISD 54444. Aircel’s existing as well as new customers will enjoy special ISD call rates through this new pre-activated tariff plan. Introduction of ‘Aircel ISD 54444’ a prefix based calling plan,’ will redefine the user experience and consumption of international calling services in the country. The plan which is industry’s first will have no additional charges.

·        Aircel ISD 54444: The prefixed based calling pack offers international calls to select top called destinations like USA, Canada, Singapore, China, UK at 1p/sec without paying any additional charges. Aircel subscribers opting for Aircel ISD 54444 will need to prefix a 5 digit toll free short code “54444” followed by 00 - Country Code – Customer number to avail the benefits of discounted international calls at 1p/sec to these 5 destinations. The prefix dialing code 54444 is common across Aircel circles. This service will not be applicable while on roaming.
·        ISD Super: A rate cutter pack specially priced at Rs. 18 offers international calls through pay per second rate to destinations in America, Europe, Asia and Gulf countries. The offer will be valid for 28 days.
·        ISD Super tariff: Till 31^st March, 2014, all new Aircel subscribers will enjoy the benefits of ISD Super tariff pre-activated in their new plan for 90 days.
